Capturing the 1970s Australian surf culture

Australia in the 1970s was a wave of long haired boys, flared Levi jeans, crotchet bikini clad girls and endless summer days.

Photographer John Witzig perfectly captures the essence of the Utopian, laid back lifestyle in the coastal towns of Australia during the 60s and 70s. His film photographs show a lifestyle of bronzed teenagers with sun kissed locks and homemade surf boards, shunning the traditional lives their parents laid out for them.

John takes us on a during through time, depicting scenes of a pre-tourist, bohemian Byron Bay and surfing contests held at the notorious Bells Beach in Victoria.
